Shopify website redesign implementation and migration to Online Store 2.0. Building custom reusable elements and a robust structure for pages to match company's vision.

Technologies

Challenge

The client wanted to re-vamp the existing Shopify website, keeping all the articles in place but allowing to group them into categories. The articles were created using the standard Page from Shopify and not the Blog option. Moving them to blogs was not an option, meaning that we needed to find a different way of grouping them.

Other requests included: a way to generate sortable tables that a non-technical person can use, templates for display products inside the pages with pros/cons, affiliate link, category pages automatically updated based on pages, each author to be able to manage his bio details, related posts at the end of articles, an improved overall mobile experience.

Solution

We created a custom Shopify theme as a branch from one of the official themes offered by the platform. The theme supported the new Shopify implementation for Online Store 2.0.

To address all the customization and especially the new structure and relationships between pages, we implemented custom fields that will hold meta data relevant to the features required.

Page templates and elements were created and delivered them in HTML format as well in shortcodes format so the authors can use them to generate elements on the page and have them match the style and structure everywhere on the site: product lists, tables, pro/cons sections, affiliate links, etc.
